Responsible Energy Use

In order to keep our society and economy running, we need a lot of energy. However, resources are becoming increasingly scarce. We want to promote more economical and more efficient energy consumption.

As the biggest ICT service provider in the Benelux, we see great potential for involving employees, customers and partners in our push towards ‘Responsible Energy Use. For years, we have been promoting smarter energy consumption. With regard to efficiency, our data centres are among the top five in the world. Our employees can choose a hybrid lease car. And we have drawn up a code of conduct for suppliers so that we can be sure that they too consider the environment and human rights.

For the future, we are committed to KPN's energy goals. In 2020, we want to be climate neutral. To achieve this, we have a number of concrete objectives:

  • Towards 20% absolute energy reduction in 2020 compared to 2005
  • Towards 20% more efficient data centres in 2020 compared to 2005
  • 100% sustainable power in 2011
  • Signing of our code of conduct by 86 suppliers.

In order to achieve our ambition, we are going to save energy and go green. That means less energy consumption through smart and economical ICT solutions, the purchase of green power and the promotion of teleworking and video conferencing.

Environmental management

KPN operates a certified environmental management system in the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom, namely ISO 14001. This is the international standard for environmental management systems, which is used to develop environmental policy, manage environmental aspects and improve an organization’s environmental performance. With the ISO 14001 certificate, we can demonstrate that we take environmental policy seriously. More and more customers are asking for this. The ISO 14001 certificate fits in with our policy for corporate social responsibility, because it makes a demonstrable contribution to both business and social goals.

The scope of the certificate is ‘selling and instituting initial and continuous supply of information and communication technology services for the business market’. Consequently, the certificate is intended for all the services for the business market. The principal requirements to qualify for the certificate are:

  • Meeting legislation and regulations.
  • Continuous improvement of environmental performance.
  • Preventing environmental pollution.
