KPN and Getronics wish to announce that, during a recent official meeting chaired by European Commissioner Mrs Neelie Kroes, they and other telecom operators and ICT suppliers signed a Code of Conduct for the reduction of the energy consumption of telecom devices and data centers.
The objective of this voluntary undertaking by the ICT industry is to realize an annual saving of 25 TWh in Europe for broadband use and data centers. This saving will not only ensure that Europe achieves its climate target, but will also be of considerable benefit to consumers, who consume a substantial part of the energy required for ICT purposes.
Responsible energy consumption and green ICT are two of the major pillars of the sustainability policy of KPN and Getronics. By managing energy responsibly and realizing energy savings in the network and data centers KPN aims to contribute towards tackling the climate problem. KPN’s target is to be climate neutral in 2020. The success of KPN’s energy management efforts can be seen from the fact that in June 2010 KPN was responsible for the biggest reduction in CO2 emissions in the Netherlands: 27.9%.
In the past year, KPN has calculated the effect that energy efficient devices has on customers. Providing customers with an updated ADSL modem in 2010 has already resulted in savings equivalent to the consumption of 1,500 households.
From the end of 2010 KPN will use only green power. The figure is currently already 75%. The next step is to realize energy savings for our customers; the Code of Conduct and our Green ICT services will make a substantial contribution to this.
