The new systems can run existing Wang®VS™ software without program or data conversion. All presently supported Wang®VS™ languages, compilers, tools and file types operate, without change, on the new platforms and available performance spans the entire range of existing Wang®VS™ models.
"This new technology rehosts the legacy Wang®VS™ computer system environment from legacy hardware into an industry standard server with 100 percent binary compatibility with traditional Wang®VS systems," said Tom Junker, vice president of TransVirtual Systems. "Businesses will now have the ability to move to modern hardware without the need for costly conversions and migrations."
Based on current generation PC and Server technologies and running on either Linux or Unix, the new product employs TransVirtual Systems'original hardware abstraction technology to replace legacy Wang®VS™ system hardware capable of running Getronics' existing applications and client developed applications. Versions of Getronics' new Wang®VS™ environment will be available for Intel® x86 and IBM pSeries servers.
Getronics and TransVirtual Systems will each sell the new product, which utilizes licensed software from both companies, and resell each other's related software licenses and support. The companies anticipate making first installations this quarter and expect to extend the product capabilities to include enhanced integration with the Internet and network-based services, as well as other capabilities that have not been previously available to clients with legacy Wang®VS™ hardware.
"We believe that the availability of a new generation of hardware for the Wang®VS™ environment will benefit our clients by offering them solutions that extend the life of their applications," said David Strohmeyer, Getronics Wang®VS™ program manager. "Best of all, this can be done at a low cost and without the extensive disruption of traditional migrations."
Getronics will continue to sell and enhance the existing Wang®VS™ product line and has committed to support the legacy Wang®VS™ platforms through at least the end of this decade.
