Windows and Office Deployment
It’s not only about Windows
Many organisations are considering upgrading users’ desktop operating systems and productivity suites. However, an IT deployment of this scale is a huge undertaking in terms of both cost and time. Many IT departments are also considering new challenges, including demands from users for greater mobility, improved security and the latest applications.
Typically during a Windows migration project an Operating System image needs to be created. The quality of this image is of course very important but it’s not only about the image. The success of a Windows roll out project depends on Application compatibility\Remediation and the way an image gets deployed.
As THE Workspace company, managing the Windows client is our core business and Getronics helps our customers strive towards the Optimized Desktop - a strategic approach to deploying (and managing) users’ desktops and giving them the most productive technology in a secure and cost effective way. Once delivery options have been considered, users are segmented into groups based on their needs, with further segmenting them against hardware, operating system, applications and user data creating an optimum set-up for delivering separate components to each group.
Microsoft Windows 7, Office 2010 and the Microsoft Desktop Optimisation Pack (MDOP) are the technologies that underpin the Optimised Desktop.
Enterprise Features
A new Operating System can offer a lot of opportunities by rolling out Enterprise features. With Windows 7 Enterprise, you can take advantage of features including:
- DirectAccess: Give mobile users seamless access to corporate networks without a need to VPN.
- BranchCache: Decrease the time branch office users spend waiting to download files across the network.
- Federated Search: Find information in remote repositories, including SharePoint sites, with a simple user interface.
- BitLocker and BitLocker To Go: Help protect data on PCs and removable drives, with manageability to enforce encryption and backup of recovery keys.
- AppLocker: Specify what software is allowed to run on a user's PCs through centrally managed but flexible Group Policies.
- Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) optimizations: Improved user experience for VDI with multimon and microphone support, which have the ability to reuse virtual hard drive (VHD) images to boot a physical PC.
- Multilingual user interface: Create a single OS image for deployment to users worldwide.
Such features help organisations move closer to the Optimised Desktop, and with Windows 8 these features are even more improved and less complex to implement. Getronics has implemented these features for customers and is also using these features internally
Application Compatibility
“It’s all about the App” - Applications are the key reasons for why we need an Operating System, so it’s clear that all your applications need to work seamlessly with the new version of Windows. Besides compatibility exercises, the provisioning of Applications is your key to success. In this increasingly mobile world of work, it is vital that users can access their Applications and Data no matter where they are located and at any time.
Deployment and Maintenance
Deploying and managing images and applications can be time consuming and costly if not carefully monitored and managed. As a central management tool, Getronics uses Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager as THE tool to keep your systems aligned and to deploy and maintain your systems cost effectively.
